What to do After a Loss at Your Home

Unfortunately accidents can happen but knowing what to do after a property loss occurs can make the experience less stressful and ensure that any inconvenience is kept to a minimum.

After a property loss

  • Promptly report the loss to your agent (Refer to telephone numbers under "Emergency Claims Assistance").
  • Protect the property from further damage or loss.
  • Make reasonable temporary repairs to protect the property.
  • Document the damage sustained.
  • Keep an accurate record of repair costs.
  • If the loss is caused by theft, notify the police.
  • If the loss involves a credit card or bank fund transfer card, notify the credit card company or bank immediately.
  • Gather together any invoices, appraisals or other documentation of ownership.

A household inventory record can help in making sure that you have properly insured your belongings to value. It can also assist when detailing the losses incurred after a fire or theft. Contact your Westland insurance broker for a complimentary household inventory pamphlet.
