What
to Do after an Auto Accident?
Even the most careful drivers may be involved in an auto accident.
Knowing what to do after the accident can make the experience a
little less frightening and decrease the chance of unnecessary complications.
After an Accident
- Stay Calm. Check for injuries. Life and health are more important
than damage to vehicles.
- Call the police, if any injury has occurred or if property damage
is estimated to be greater than $1,000.
- Get the facts. Write down the names, addresses and license
numbers of persons involved in the accident. Also, write a description
of the other vehicles and specific damages to all vehicles involved
- Get more facts. Write down names and addresses of anyone who
may have witnessed the accident. This can prevent disagreement
concerning how the accident actually happened.
- Don’t leave personal belongigs in your vehicle if it needs
to be towed away.
Report your claim. Call Westland insurance if your vehicle is privately
insured through a Westland broker. Or call ICBC if your vehicle
is insured by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia
Other Do's and Don'ts
- Do write down details about the accident, the location, and
circumstances such as weather conditions and visibility. Do report
your claim immediately.
- Don’t sign any document unless it is for the police or
your insurance agent.
- Don't admit liability or fault at the scene or at any other
time.
- Do visit your Westland Insurance broker to receive a free copy
of "What do I do if I have an Accident" brochure.Keep
this report in your glove compartment in case of an accident.
Use it to record critical information at the scene of the accident
or as soon afterwards as possible.
